Will stamp duty land tax be payable?

Question:
I have inherited a property and wish to demolish it and build a new one in its place. Would I have to pay stamp duty land tax on the new-build?

Arthur Weller replies:
If you look at www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/sdltmanual/SDLTM00260.htm you can see that stamp duty land tax (SDLT) is charged on land transactions. But in your scenario no-one is transferring any interest in land to anyone else - so SDLT is not applicable.
