Meg Saksida highlights an HMRC campaign aimed at promoters and users of tax avoidance schemes. 

The title of this article is the name of a new public awareness campaign jointly launched by HMRC and the ASA (advertising standards authority) to curb misleading marketing of tax avoidance schemes.  

Tax avoidance is broadly manipulating the legislation and guidance to gain a tax advantage that was never envisaged by those that wrote the legislation. The government has waged war on ‘morally repugnant’ (as George Osborne described it in 2011) tax avoidance for years and is determined to crush the promotion and subsequent lure of attractive and tempting tax avoidance schemes.  

However, despite HMRC having made noteworthy progress in the reduction of both schemes and promoters over the last six years, with around 20 promoters having stopped promoting altogether and
