Mum has dementia – is she exempt from council tax?

Question:
I have just been told that because my mother has the onset of dementia she doesn`t have to pay council tax. Is this true?

Arthur Weller replies:
For council tax purposes, certain people are not counted in deciding how many residents there are, providing certain conditions are met. These include severely mentally impaired people. See www.gov.uk/council-tax/who-has-to-pay.
