If I purchase in my name do I have to pay stamp duty land tax?

Question:

I have been living with my husband in a property in Liverpool that has a mortgage in his name for the last 15 years. I have never had my name on any title deeds or mortgages before. If I was to purchase a property as an investment in my name only, would I have to pay stamp duty land tax?

Arthur Weller replies:
In November 2017, the government introduced a new relief from stamp duty land tax (SDLT) for first time buyers, but it only applies where the purchaser occupies the property as their main residence, which you do not intend to do. Furthermore, since your husband owns a property, you will have to pay an extra 3% SDLT when you purchase this new property
