Do I need to declare this income?

Question:
If I let out an outbuilding on my main residential property do I need to declare it? If so, is it my income or can it be attributed to my wife's income?

Arthur Weller replies:
You do need to declare the income. Any income from land is liable to tax - see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/pimmanual/PIM1051.htm. If the property is jointly owned then you generally need to declare the income 50:50 between you and your wife. See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tsemmanual/TSEM9814.htm
