Can they claim travel expenses?

Question:
If a relative comes to fix some issues in my buy-to-let and is not VAT registered, can they claim for travel expenses to my second property? I do not live at the same property as my relative, who lives further away than I do to the property.

Arthur Weller replies:
If your relative does work for you in your rental property, then they can invoice you for the work they do. The amount they invoice you will be self-employed taxable income in their hands. As long as it is reasonable, it will be an allowable expense for you, to offset against your rental income.
