Can I claim council tax exemption on my empty house?

Question:
My London house is owned by myself, my husband and my son.  My son works in London and has his own apartment.  My husband and I live in Singapore permanently.  The London house was bought for my son to live in when he worked there but since he has now bought an apartment, the house is now empty.  Can council tax be exempt since the house is still empty and we have not decided what to do with it?  It has been empty since 1st August.

Arthur Weller Replies:

You need to notify the council that the property is now empty. One of the exemptions from council tax is an empty, unfurnished property. It is exempt for up to six months.
